Oslo District Court has sentenced Marius Borg Høiby to four years imprisonment for rape. The 29-year-old man is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway.
Høiby, who holds no royal title, was charged with 38 offences. The prosecution accused him of rape, violence in close relationships, threats of murder, drugs possession and traffic offences. He denied guilt for the rape charge but admitted to some traffic offences, drug-related matters and breaches of a restraining order.
The legal case escalated after Høiby was first arrested in 2024, suspected of having attacked a former partner. Several women subsequently came forward with new allegations. The final charge decision detailed four alleged rapes committed between 2018 and November 2024, as well as violence and threats against former partners.
The court found that the young man had committed rape and sentenced him accordingly. He attended the verdict hearing via video from his cell, where he has been held on remand since the beginning of February.
This sentence represents a shock to the Norwegian monarchy, which until now had cultivated an image of discreet stability. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is seriously ill, which adds further drama to this case.
