A man in his 40s, known from Norwegian reality television, appeared on Monday at Øvre Telemark District Court, charged with rape and assault of his former wife and five breaches of a contact ban. This is reported by Google News DK — Crime (da) with reference to the Norwegian media outlet Se og Hør.
The indictment covers conduct that, according to the charge sheet, took place from October 2021 to May 2026. When asked by district court judge Andreas Listaul Veiding whether he admitted criminal responsibility, the man answered no to all counts.
— He looks forward to giving his account, said defence counsel Frank Gajic Tveit to Se og Hør ahead of the trial.
The first day of proceedings was set aside for the injured party's testimony.
Rape and physical coercion
The most serious charge concerns rape. According to the charge sheet, the man is alleged to have had vaginal intercourse with the woman on several occasions between October 2021 and December 2024, including by holding or pressing her down physically, even though she was crying and expressing that she did not consent. The charge sheet describes the woman as having made whatever resistance she was capable of under the circumstances.
Threats of dismemberment and systematic control
The indictment further describes how the man allegedly subjected the woman to psychological abuse over the same period through threats, coercion, control and degrading behaviour. According to the charge sheet, he allegedly threatened that she was lucky to be alive because he supposedly fantasised about dismembering her.
Control over the woman's life is described as comprehensive: she had to dress according to his wishes, was not allowed to work and was not permitted to decide for herself who she socialised with. He also threatened that she would not be allowed to see her children if she left him. The woman was denied medical help when ill, and the man refused to allow her to use contraception. According to the indictment, he also wished to place her under guardianship without grounds for doing so. The degrading behaviour allegedly included calling her a "loser" and saying that she was not intelligent enough to manage on her own.
Breach of contact ban
The third charge concerns five breaches of the contact ban. According to the charge sheet, the man attempted to contact the woman both by telephone and through intermediaries who were to pass messages to her.
Defence counsel Frank Gajic Tveit stated previously to Se og Hør:
— He denies criminal responsibility and will fight for acquittal.
Injured party hopes to inspire others
The injured party told the Norwegian media outlet Telen that she looks forward to moving on.
— I think the trial will go well. I am worried about certain details, but what I am most concerned about is my own safety around the trial.
She expressed hope that her case could help encourage others to report violence and abuse in close relationships. Victim advocate Anders Bjørnebekk declined to comment on the case ahead of the trial's start on Monday, 24 August.
