A court in Oslo has sentenced 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby to four years' imprisonment. He is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and was found guilty of two rapes, domestic violence and two other offences.
The man was not present in the courtroom when the verdict was read out, but followed proceedings via video link. He has consistently denied the most serious charges and maintained his innocence. However, he has admitted to lesser offences, according to 24ur.com.
The prosecution had requested seven years and seven months' imprisonment, whilst the defence counsel asked for a sentence of 18 months. The court settled on four years. The verdict can be appealed. Høiby must also pay a total of 640,000 Norwegian kroner, approximately €57,000, in compensation to four women, including a former girlfriend.
During the seven-week trial, details emerged about his substance abuse. The court was also shown recordings of sexual acts that he had filmed himself. One of the rapes was said to have taken place in the basement of the Crown Prince's family home. Among the evidence were also over 800 electronic messages. The verdict runs to 128 pages.
Høiby has been known from Norwegian newspaper front pages for several years due to misconduct. Police have arrested him several times for disorderly behaviour, most recently two days before the trial began, when he is alleged to have threatened a former girlfriend with a knife. He was then held in custody for one month.
His mother, Mette-Marit, married into the royal family when Høiby was four years old. His stepfather is Crown Prince Haakon, the future King of Norway. Although he grew up in royal surroundings, he is not an official member of the royal family, holds no royal duties and is not in the line of succession to the throne.
