Son of Norwegian princess sentenced to four years' imprisonment for rape
Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has been found guilty of rape and several other criminal offences. Oslo District Court has sentenced the 29-year-old to four years' imprisonment, according to Daily Mail.
Høiby acknowledged parts of the less serious offences during the trial, but denied culpability for the rape allegations. The court nonetheless found him guilty on two counts of rape, one instance of domestic violence against a former partner, threats, and traffic offences. He was simultaneously acquitted on two other rape charges.
The prosecution had demanded a sentence of seven years and seven months' imprisonment during the case, whilst the defence rejected the most serious allegations. The trial lasted seven weeks, and the judges assessed hundreds of messages, video recordings and other digital evidence. Parts of the indictment concerned events that were said to have taken place over a period of several years.
Høiby holds no royal title and has no official duties, but because of his close ties to the Norwegian royal house the case has attracted strong public attention. He is the eldest son of Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship before her marriage to Norway's future king Haakon. He has the right to appeal the verdict.
