Two people in Romerike have been found dead within the past month with high concentrations of methanol in their blood, according to East Police District, as reported by nettavisen.no. Both victims came from the same environment and lived in the same region.
Methanol, popularly known as "wood alcohol", is highly toxic and is detected periodically in smuggled spirits.
– We currently do not have much information about where the spirits they drank came from. For this reason, we urge citizens to only buy and drink spirits from sealed bottles purchased at Vinmonopolet, the police wrote on Facebook.
In cases of methanol poisoning, fatigue, headache, nausea and stomach pain typically occur, followed by visual disturbances and respiratory difficulties, according to Store Norske Leksikon. In severe cases, the person loses consciousness, and breathing as well as heart function become paralysed. Survivors risk permanent neurological damage and blindness.
