Police found large quantities of illegal substances in a locked storage unit beneath a residential block in central Trondheim. A local businessman was arrested and is now being held in solitary confinement.

Early Thursday morning, police conducted a raid on a residential building in Trondheim. There they found a locked storage unit in the basement containing a large quantity of illegal drugs.
A man who runs a shop in the area was arrested the same night. According to the judge in the case, he is to be remanded in custody for one month. For the first fourteen days he will be in complete solitary confinement without letters or visits.
Investigators believe the man had keys to both the storage unit and a safe where the consignment was hidden. These keys were seized in his own flat during his arrest.
The man's defence lawyer has argued that an alleged accomplice in the flat may have borne primary responsibility. The judge nonetheless found it most reasonable to conclude that it was the arrested man who controlled the substances, while not ruling out the involvement of other persons.
The case remains under investigation. Authorities fear that release could lead to destruction of evidence or pressure on witnesses. If convicted, the man risks several years' imprisonment for the serious drug offence.
The arrested man was not present when the remand order was announced, but has the right to appeal the decision within fourteen days.
