Armed police operation on Notodden: man suspected of possessing firearm

Armed police deployed following welfare call in Notodden

At 10.21 on Wednesday, police responded to a welfare call in Notodden, according to NRK Norge. Operations leader Vegar Dale Møane confirms that the area has been secured with armed police.

– We have reason to believe that he is in possession of a firearm, Dale Møane tells NRK.

Police have requested assistance from national emergency resources, which were en route to the scene. A crisis and hostage negotiator is in dialogue with the man by telephone.

The operations leader emphasises that the operation is initially a welfare matter, and that there are no grounds for believing the man poses a danger to anyone other than police.

– Our goal is to provide him with necessary medical care. We must do what is necessary to gain control of him, says Dale Møane.

Several areas in the vicinity have been cordoned off in connection with the operation, according to local newspaper Telen.
