Shooting in Cercado de Lima leaves two wounded with guarded prognosis

A retired police officer and his son were shot during the night of Sunday 25 October in Cercado de Lima, according to reporting by diariocorreo.pe. Both were travelling in a black pick-up truck when they were intercepted and pursued by individuals on a motorcycle.

The attack occurred on block 11 of Jirón Zorritos, near the junction with Avenida Naciones Unidas. The two wounded men were taken to a nearby clinic, where they remain with guarded prognosis.

Attack begins near Las Malvinas

Surveillance footage released by América Noticias shows the assault began in the vicinity of Las Malvinas, as the pick-up truck was exiting a car park. In the recordings, a man dressed in black can be seen approaching the vehicle and opening fire on its occupants.

Panamericana Televisión also reported that two subjects on a motorcycle fired repeatedly at the vehicle during the pursuit. Witnesses told the outlet that several people had to take shelter in nearby shops to protect themselves from the gunfire.

More than 20 shell casings found at the scene

Personnel from Peru's National Police (PNP) cordoned off the area and conducted forensic procedures. Experts found more than 20 bullet shell casings at the site of the attack, according to América Noticias, and identified four bullet impacts on the passenger door of the pick-up truck.

The evidence collected will allow reconstruction of the sequence of the assault, establishment of the positions from which shots were fired, and mapping of the perpetrators' route. The PNP is also gathering testimony from witnesses and local business owners.

Possible extortion link under investigation

One of the hypotheses being evaluated by investigators is that the attempted assassination could be linked to an extortion case. Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive for the attack.

Agents are seeking to determine whether the retired police officer or his son had received prior threats and whether the attackers had conducted surveillance on the pick-up truck before the ambush. Proceedings include analysis of security footage and identification of the man in black captured firing.

As of the morning of Monday 26 October, no arrests had been made, nor had the identities of the wounded or a detailed medical report on the severity of their injuries been released.

Non-operational public cameras complicate the investigation

Following the shooting, residents of the area expressed concern about the condition of surveillance camera systems installed near Jirón Zorritos. According to accounts collected by América Noticias, several public cameras were reportedly out of service, which could hinder identification of the attackers and their escape route.

Faced with this, investigators are also turning to footage from private cameras located in shops, car parks, and other establishments in Las Malvinas. The National Police continues its investigation to clarify the circumstances of the attempted assassination.
