Trial of PSP officers accused of torture marks return of courts in September

The most awaited case is the trial of two PSP officers from the Rato police station in Lisbon, accused of abuse of power, torture, rape, offences against physical integrity, document falsification, aggravated theft, robbery and possession of a prohibited firearm. The first session is scheduled for 11 September at 09:30, and the second for 6 October at the same time.
At Faro Court, the trial of two PSP officers from Olhão — accused of kidnapping and homicide of a Moroccan man in March 2024 — is set to begin on 8 September.
In Lisbon, September is also the month when the Operation Marquês trial resumes, with sessions scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 of the month. The case, which began on 3 July 2025, involves 21 defendants, including former prime minister José Sócrates and former Banco Espírito Santo (BES) president Ricardo Salgado, accused of corruption and other economic-financial crimes allegedly committed between 2005 and 2014. Still without a fixed date, it is expected that Sócrates will give evidence in court again.
The BES case trial, which began on 15 October 2024 — almost ten years after the bank's collapse — resumes on 7 September. The case has 18 defendants. Ricardo Salgado, the main defendant, faces 65 charges, although some have already been time-barred.
Within economic crime, the case related to BES Angola (BESA), which includes charges of breach of trust, money laundering and fraud, resumes on 1 September. Besides Salgado, former BESA president Álvaro Sobrinho is another of the main defendants.
The trial of the Perfeita Storm case, with 73 defendants and involving public contracts concluded by the Directorate-General for National Defence Resources, has sessions scheduled for 9 and 10 September.
On 10 September at 10:00, the preliminary hearing debate of the Tutti Frutti case is resumed at Monsanto Court in Lisbon. The case, which began in June, has 59 defendants and over four hundred charges of corruption, misconduct in office, money laundering and trafficking in influence.
On 23 September, Operation Lex is resumed at the Supreme Military Court in Lisbon, with the continuation of witness examination by the Public Prosecutor's Office. On the same day, the NRP Mondego case returns to Campus de Justiça, also in Lisbon, where three military personnel face charges of breach of state secrecy.
