During the first four months of the present year, Paraguay's police authorities received 1,020 reports of missing persons. Of that total, 772 were found alive, whilst 248 remain at an unknown location.
Second subofficer Ramón Vera, a member of the department responsible for the search and location of missing persons, released the statistical data. According to his report, among the cases still unresolved are 154 adults, 78 minors and 16 children.
Vera noted that the majority of the persons reported as missing correspond to individuals over the age of majority. With regard to teenagers, the official explained that in numerous cases they abandon their homes due to family conflicts or, in some cases, because of issues linked to substance abuse.
The case of the minor Mathías, who was taken in Pedro Juan Caballero and subsequently recovered, prompted the review of these official figures.
The police officer took the opportunity to remind the population that in the event of the disappearance of any person it is not necessary to wait a 24-hour period before filing the corresponding report. The alert must be made immediately to the competent authorities.
