A serious allegation of police brutality weighs on the Eighth Metropolitan Police Station following the death of Edgar Amarilla, a 27-year-old man who died last Monday.
The events began on Saturday night, when officers arrested him on the grounds that he was causing a disturbance in public spaces. Upon his release on Sunday, his brothers discovered him with multiple contusions, bruises and signs of assault across his body.
He was taken urgently first to Barrio Obrero Hospital and then to the Trauma Hospital. He died during the early hours of Monday as a result of extremely serious internal injuries, according to a report by La Tribu 650 AM in its news service.
The young man's relatives provided video recordings that capture him boarding the police vehicle of his own volition and without resistance, which contradicts the account given by the officers regarding an alleged use of force.
Faced with the outrage of neighbours, who gathered in front of the police station in the Republicano neighbourhood, chief superintendent Gustavo Recarte presented himself as an intermediary at the direction of the Asunción Police Directorate.
The family members are demanding a forensic autopsy and the immediate removal of the police station commander, Víctor Perdomo. Additionally, they warn that this would not be the first time an incident of these dimensions has occurred in that area.
