The case of a teenager who disappeared in the city of Nueva Asunción has prompted the judiciary to intervene directly. It concerns Gimena Chanel Benítez Bernal, a 16-year-old girl who lives in the Loma Conche neighbourhood and from whom there has been no word for days.
Faced with the lack of progress in locating her, prosecutor Liz Portillo Sosa—in charge of Penal Unit No. 5 based in Villa Hayes—decided to take action on the matter. The official sent a communication to the police station in the area demanding a detailed account of each measure taken so far.
The judicial order requires the officers to present, within one day, a document detailing the search operations deployed since the minor's parents reported her disappearance. The intention is to assess whether the guidelines established for this type of situation were followed correctly.
In addition, Portillo Sosa cited explicitly two provisions of the Criminal Procedural Code—articles 59 and 300—which set out the responsibilities of the Judicial Police and the maximum timeframes for reporting to the Public Ministry on the status of a case.
The judicial order also emphasises the need to implement specific protocols designed for searching for people who have gone missing, with the aim of maximising the chances of finding the young woman safe.
The investigation remains active in the meantime. Authorities are urging the public that, if they have any useful information, they should go to the nearest police station or contact the National Police's 911 system immediately.
