An employee of the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) in Asunción was jailed after striking a member of the National Police. The episode occurred on Sunday, 19 April, during the match between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño.
According to information published by the Municipality of Asunción, officer Nicolás Fariña participated in violent acts on the day of the superclásico. Rodrigo Delvalle, who serves as spokesman for the municipality, clarified that the attacker was not on duty when he caused serious injury to the national officer.
The detention occurred near 05:50 on the following Monday, when Fariña was finishing his night shift. A magistrate issued the arrest warrant for the alleged offences of aggravated assault and breach of public order.
Municipal chief Luis Bello immediately ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against the accused. The internal process will await the decision of the criminal justice system, which has already intervened in the case. The defendant was removed from his position and handed over to the Human Resources Directorate.
The capital's administration reiterated its rejection of any violent conduct by its officials. The actions of the detained individual do not reflect the values or the dedication that the institution maintains towards residents, they stated.
