The Municipality of Asunción decided to suspend and open a disciplinary process against a Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) officer who was detained after participating in an assault that occurred on Sunday, 19 April, during the match between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño.
Mayor Luis Bello instructed that an administrative investigation be opened against Nicolás Fariña. This internal proceeding depends on what is determined by the criminal case that the Public Prosecutor's Office is already pursuing, according to what was published by the municipality on its institutional portal.
Rodrigo Delvalle explained that the incident would have occurred when the uniformed officer, despite not being on duty, allegedly assaulted a member of the National Police, causing him significant injuries. The arrest was made as he left his shift, around 05:50 the following morning.
A judge ordered the man's apprehension as part of an investigation for the alleged offences of aggravated assault and breach of public order. At the same time, the Municipality opened the investigation following a request from the PMT leadership, with the involvement of the Personnel and Legal Advisory departments.
Bello made clear that his administration rejects any behaviour that goes against the institution's principles. "I immediately ordered the start of the investigation due to the seriousness and evidence of the acts imputed to him. I reaffirm my commitment to transparency, respect for regulations and integrity," he stated.
At present, the officer is suspended from his duties and under the custody of the Human Resources Department, whilst both the Public Prosecutor's investigation and the municipal administrative proceeding are underway.
