An altercation between two young men ended with one of them seriously injured on the night of Wednesday, 19 March, at the intersection of Aníbal Añazco Street and Venezuela Avenue, in the Paraguayan capital.
According to information from police sources, Sebastián Duarte García, 25, was standing in front of his home when Juan Ignacio Penayo Vera, 19, approached him and began to confront him verbally. The verbal argument escalated rapidly into a physical confrontation.
During the fight, the older man allegedly pulled out a blade and inflicted a stab wound to the chest area of his opponent. Relatives of the injured man immediately assisted him and took him to the Trauma Hospital, where he was admitted for medical attention.
Following an alert issued through the emergency services system 911, personnel from Police Station 20 arrived at the scene. Although the victim had already been evacuated, officers gathered information that made it possible to identify the attacker.
Penayo Vera had fled the scene, which triggered a search of the neighbourhood. Law enforcement officers located him when he attempted to return to his house in the vicinity. During the procedure, a knife that allegedly was used in the assault was seized.
The investigation determined that the motive for the conflict was related to Duarte García's partner, who had previously maintained a romantic relationship with Penayo Vera. This circumstance had already caused friction between the two men on previous occasions.
Officers also noted that the detainee appeared to be under the influence of some psychoactive substance at the time of the incident. Penayo Vera, who has no criminal record, was placed in custody at the disposal of the Public Ministry, by order of on-duty prosecutor Hermenegilda Cubilla.
