A family from Asunción is reporting that one of its members died as a result of blows sustained while in the custody of the Eighth Metropolitan Police Station. The victim, identified as Edgar Amarilla, was 27 years old and died in the early hours of Monday.
According to his relatives, officers took him into custody on Saturday during the night on the grounds that he was disturbing the peace in public spaces. When he regained his freedom the following day, his brothers noticed that he had contusions, bruises and signs of physical violence. They rushed him first to Hospital de Barrio Obrero and then to the Hospital del Trauma, where doctors were unable to save his life due to severe internal injuries.

Amarilla's relatives provided recordings showing the young man getting into the police vehicle without struggling or resisting, which contradicts the justification given by the officers regarding the need to use violence during his apprehension.
The outrage prompted a gathering of residents outside the police station in the Republicano neighbourhood. In response to the situation, the Asunción Police Directorate assigned chief superintendent Gustavo Recarte to dialogue with the protesters.
The relatives are demanding that a forensic autopsy be performed and that Police Commissioner Víctor Perdomo, who heads the station, be removed from his post. They also warn that this would not be the first similar case recorded at that police station.
