An officer of the Paraguayan Army was murdered on Tuesday in a residential area of the capital during a confrontation that escalated into lethal violence. The victim, 38 years old and originally from Coronel Oviedo, Department of Caaguazú, served as a cavalry captain.
The incident occurred in the Zeballos Cué neighbourhood, where the uniformed officer was discovered on the ground without vital signs. His body bore numerous injuries inflicted by a sharp object. Neighbourhood witnesses told local media outlets that they saw an individual abandon the victim's truck and run off to disappear among the streets of the sector.
The police authorities examined security camera footage from the area, which allowed them to identify the alleged perpetrator. He is a 50-year-old man named Gregorio Arturo Cáceres Román, who was captured by personnel from the 23rd Police Station of the capital.
During a search of the detainee's residence, officers found a cart used to collect recyclable materials that matched the one seen in the crime scene images. Additionally, they confiscated a mobile phone, documents for a vehicle possibly linked to the incident, and the clothing that the accused allegedly wore during the confrontation.
Residents of the neighbourhood stated that the deceased had been seen previously in that area, although they were unaware of what brought him there or the reasons for the homicide.
