Operation in Amambay destroys 22 camps and seizes 160 tonnes of cannabis

Joint blow against drug trafficking in Amambay: almost 160 tonnes removed from illegal circulation
Anti-drug forces from Paraguay and Brazil removed almost 160 tonnes of cannabis from illegal circulation during the first three days of Operation New Alliance 56, carried out in the department of Amambay, according to adndigital.com.py. The estimated economic damage to criminal organisations amounts to USD 4.7 million, with lost profits exceeding USD 23 million projected in the Brazilian market, according to the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD).
The operation brings together special agents from SENAD, tactical units of the Internal Defence Operations Command of the Joint Task Force (CODI-FTC), aircraft from the Paraguayan Air Force and aerial support from the Brazilian Federal Police.
The actions are coordinated by prosecutor Rosana Coronel, of the Paraguayan Public Ministry, with the objective of affecting the structures dedicated to the cultivation and processing of cannabis in areas controlled by transnational organisations.
On the ground, 22 clandestine camps were located and destroyed. Teams seized 9,620 kilos of pressed cannabis, some of it stored in underground depots to hinder its detection. In addition, 50 hectares of cannabis plantations were eliminated with a potential production of approximately 150,000 kilos.
From SENAD they indicated that incursions will continue in the coming days with the purpose of dismantling further production centres and reducing the operational capacity of drug trafficking networks in the border zone.
