The attorney general of Paraguay, Emiliano Rolón, and his Salvadorian counterpart, Rodolfo Delgado, signed a bilateral cooperation agreement on Monday to combat transnational organised crime. The Paraguayan Prosecutor's Office stated in a statement that both institutions committed themselves to "strengthen the fight against complex and transnational organised crime and guarantee the widest cooperation with respect to criminal proceedings".
The agreement contemplates the exchange of knowledge, information and experience "with the purpose of understanding the evolution of different criminal phenomena and the planning of criminal prosecution strategies". Likewise, the two institutions will collaborate to "prosecute any manifestation of corruption" in both countries.
Among the central points is the investigation and prosecution of economic crime, with special emphasis on asset laundering and the financing of terrorism, as well as the identification, freezing and seizure of assets linked to such crimes.
The document, signed at the headquarters of the Public Ministry in Asunción, also establishes that both prosecutors' offices "will coordinate actions to confront drug-related crime". In that regard, they will exchange data on drug trafficking routes and related statistics, and will promote the identification of the chain of responsibility within organisations dedicated to drug trafficking.
