A large contingent of citizens gathered on Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday in the centre of Asunción to watch Paraguay's third match in the 2026 World Cup on screens installed in the street. The match ended in a nil-all draw against Australia. The public order authority described the operation deployed as part of the initiative called "The Centre Supports" as satisfactory.
Similar to what occurred on previous competition days, traffic and security authorities ordered a partial closure of Palma avenue and surrounding streets, preventing vehicle traffic to allow attendees to remain in the area.
The security forces reported no serious incidents during the evening.
The second-in-command of the third precinct in the capital, officer Juan González, told journalists from ABC Color that approximately twenty adults were taken to the police station. According to his statement, many of them were informally engaged in vehicle guarding activities, demanding money from drivers.
Among items seized from those arrested were homemade weapons with spherical projectiles and small quantities of plant material believed to be cannabis.
At another of the control points established at the limits of the pedestrian zone, officers succeeded in capturing Dionisio Ramón Samudio, a 25-year-old man. The individual was wanted by justice authorities for an offence involving assault with aggravating circumstances and had a record for unlawful killing with malice, aggravated theft, and domestic violence offences.
In parallel, uniformed officers removed a group of 21 adolescents and children who were alone in the vicinity of Palma street, taking them to the police station until their parents or legal guardians could collect them.
