Lawyer detained in Pitești following fatal accident: victim a 59-year-old Bulgarian citizen
A 53-year-old lawyer, university lecturer at the Faculty of Law in Craiova, has been detained and presented before a judge at the Pitești Court of Appeal with a proposal for preventive arrest, according to ProTV News. The man is accused of negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, after allegedly striking down a cyclist with his car in Pitești municipality.
The victim, a 59-year-old Bulgarian citizen, was already deceased when emergency crews arrived at the scene, alerted by other drivers who had observed the body on the roadside.
Police analysed footage captured by multiple surveillance cameras and identified the vehicle involved — an SUV found the following morning in the lawyer's yard. Contacted by PRO TV reporters that same day, the driver stated that he had not noticed the cyclist, whom he said was in an unlit area and had no signalling lights on the bicycle.
However, sources from the investigation contradict this version: the SUV's windscreen was shattered by the impact. The defendant refused to explain to the judge why he did not stop immediately after the accident.
