Man arrested for 30 days after allegedly demanding €40,000 to influence DNA prosecutors
A man has been remanded in custody by Bucharest Court for abuse of office, after allegedly demanding money whilst claiming he could intervene with DNA prosecutors and police officers.
Man detained in flagrante delicto after receiving €10,000 from a sum allegedly demanded of €25,000
Bucharest Court has ordered the 30-day remand in custody of a man identified as Ș.V.A., accused of abuse of office on two counts and incitement to abuse of office, reports agerpres.ro, citing a statement from the National Anti-Corruption Directorate transmitted on Monday.
The judge for rights and freedoms at Bucharest Court admitted on Sunday a proposal by DNA prosecutors – the Anti-Corruption Section, regarding this person without official capacity.
Three distinct schemes to demand money
According to investigators, in November 2024, Ș.V.A. allegedly demanded a sum of €40,000 from two persons, claiming that he held influence over a prosecutor and police officers within the DNA and that he would ensure they resolved a criminal case favourably. From this sum, the man actually received €28,000.
In a second episode, in May, the same man allegedly induced and supported another person to demand €40,000 from a mayor. The money was allegedly intended for the case prosecutor from the DNA, with the aim of making him fail to perform his official duties in a criminal case. For this alleged intervention, the man received €6,000.
A third scheme is described as follows by investigators: "The accused allegedly demanded from one of the aforementioned persons the sum of €25,000, in two tranches, claiming that he held influence over a prosecutor and a commissioner within the National Anti-Corruption Directorate and that he would make them take steps regarding the alleged offences committed by officials from a town hall within Buzău County, as well as to order a favourable outcome in the case."
Caught in flagrante delicto on Friday
On Friday, Ș.V.A. received from the person in question the sum of €10,000, representing the first tranche of the €25,000 allegedly demanded. At that moment, anti-corruption prosecutors proceeded to establish the offence in flagrante delicto, according to the DNA.
Prior convictions for similar offences
The DNA specifies that the man had previously been convicted for similar offences in three criminal cases previously handled by prosecutors from the institution.
