Detained in Timișoara after months of car thefts and unpaid fuel

A man from Timișoara has been remanded in custody for 30 days after he drove several stolen cars without a licence, which he equipped with false registration plates and used to fuel up at several petrol stations in the city without paying for the fuel, according to News.ro.

According to a statement from the Prosecutor's Office attached to Timișoara District Court, the offences took place between 27 March and 16 July 2026. During this period, the defendant drove nine times on public roads in Timișoara vehicles with false registration plates, and fuelled up at various petrol stations on twelve occasions without paying. The total damage was set at 6,070.70 lei.

The prosecutor's office emphasised that the seriousness of the charges is evident from the large number of offences, but also from the manner in which they were committed — at night and using registration plates belonging to other vehicles, with the purpose of making it difficult to identify the perpetrator. "The offences were committed at night and through the use of registration numbers belonging to other vehicles, with the purpose of hindering the identification and detection of the perpetrator and participants," the statement said.

The court also noted the defendant's personal circumstances: he is not a first-time offender with the criminal justice system, he committed offences previously whilst a minor and is currently under investigation or has been brought to trial for other similar offences.

The list of charges is a substantial one: eight offences of aggravated theft committed at night, four offences of theft, nine offences of driving a vehicle without a licence, one offence of driving an unregistered vehicle and nine offences of putting into circulation or driving a vehicle with false registration plates.

The judge for rights and freedoms at Timișoara District Court upheld the prosecutor's proposal and ordered the defendant's remand in custody for 30 days.
