Corruption case at Sibiu Prefecture: seven police officers detained, remand arrest sought for five
Prosecutors at the Tribunal of Sibiu have sought the remand arrest of six people – five police officers and one civilian intermediary – in a case involving over 170 offences of abuse of influence, bribery, giving of bribes and complicity in corruption, reports goldring.ro.
On Wednesday, 14 searches were carried out in connection with the case. On the same day, nine suspects, including seven police officers, were detained. On Thursday, prosecutors initiated criminal proceedings against all nine.
How the bribery scheme operated
According to investigators, between June 2025 and October 2026, a 57-year-old man demanded and received sums ranging from 100 lei to 1,500 euros from citizens. In return, he promised to intervene to secure the rapid issuance of vehicle registration certificates, identity documents, or to obtain a "Pass" rating on the practical examination for the driving test.
The man acted as an intermediary for seven police officers working within the Institution of the Sibiu Prefect, specifically within S.P.C.R.P.C.Î.V. Sibiu and S.P.C.E.P. Sibiu – the registration services and population records services. The sums collected from citizens, ranging from 50 to 2,000 euros, were subsequently transferred to the public officials involved.
In addition to his intermediary activities, the 57-year-old man is also being investigated for usury: investigators established that he repeatedly granted loans with interest without authorisation to people from the county.
Four driving examiners targeted for arrest
The proposal for remand arrest concerns the 57-year-old intermediary and five of the detained police officers, of whom four held the position of examiners for the practical tests of the driving examination. The other three defendants were placed under judicial supervision.
The proposal for arrest is to be decided by the judge of rights and freedoms at the Tribunal of Sibiu.
