Potra released from house arrest, remains under judicial supervision

According to Cotidianul.ro, the High Court of Cassation and Justice has decided to replace the house arrest measure with judicial supervision in the case of mercenary Horațiu Potra. Although no longer required to remain at his residence, Potra must report periodically to police and must not contact persons designated by investigators or other defendants in the case.

Potra is being tried alongside former presidential election candidate Călin Georgescu and 20 other people. The case concerns actions associated with an attempt against constitutional order, to which are added accusations of breaching the regime governing weapons and ammunition, violation of regulations concerning explosive materials, and unauthorised carrying out of operations with pyrotechnic articles.

The General Prosecutor's Office investigation was opened after Potra and several members of his group were stopped in traffic in December 2024 whilst travelling towards Bucharest.

In a separate case involving tax evasion, embezzlement and money laundering, Potra escaped in May 2025 from seizure imposed on his assets. The precautionary measures had targeted approximately 26 million lei (5.2 million euros) held in bank accounts, 28.91 kilograms of gold and 12 properties in Bucharest and Sibiu County. Prosecutors claim the money came from security contracts carried out in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
