Mayor of Slănic Moldova held in preventive arrest after allegedly accepting bribe in two instalments

Benone Moraru, PSD mayor of the town of Slănic Moldova, has been held in preventive arrest after the Bucharest Court approved a request from the National Anti-Corruption Directorate, according to spotmedia.ro. Initially, the official had only been detained.

Investigators allege that Moraru received, in two instalments, a total sum of €21,000 from a representative of a firm that held a contract with Slănic Moldova Town Hall in Bacău County. The contract, concluded in 2025, concerned emergency interventions to restore drinking water supply capacity from the drain and had a value of 1,464,349.43 lei.

The first instalment — €15,000 — was allegedly handed over on 23 July 2026, in connection with the awarding, extension and execution of the contract, despite part of the work having already been paid out by the town hall. The second instalment, of €6,000, was allegedly delivered on 27 October, when anti-corruption prosecutors established the offence was committed in flagrante delicto.

The mayor has been informed of the accusations against him.
