19-year-old detained for sexual assault at Tineretului metro station in Bucharest
A 19-year-old man with dual Romanian and Turkish citizenship has been detained after allegedly sexually assaulting at least eight women at Tineretului metro station. The Bucharest police have appealed for possible victims to file complaints.
Detained following repeated assaults at Tineretului metro station
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Service of Sector 4 detained, on 4 September 2026, a 19-year-old man suspected of multiple counts of sexual assault, according to Gândul. The suspect, who holds dual Romanian and Turkish citizenship, allegedly assaulted at least eight women, of whom only one has filed a complaint with police.
The first reported incident dates from 1 September 2026, when a woman reported to the authorities that, whilst travelling towards the exit of Tineretului metro station, she was the victim of a sexual assault. According to the police statement, the act allegedly occurred around 07:55, in the area of the escalators connecting the underground section of the station to the above-ground pavement: "a young man allegedly lifted the dress worn by the victim and touched her on the legs, without her consent".
Subsequent investigations established that it was not an isolated incident. "Officers established that the young man allegedly approached and touched several women in intimate areas, thus meaning there are multiple possible victims of similar acts, these not yet having been identified at this moment", the Bucharest Police statement states. Judicial sources indicated that the number of possible victims would be eight.
Based on information and evidence gathered, officers issued an arrest warrant in the suspect's name. On 4 September, the young man was brought to the police unit for continued investigation, and a detention measure was ordered for 24 hours, with him to be presented to magistrates with a legal recommendation.
The Bucharest Police issue a public appeal to all persons who might be among the victims of similar acts to contact the authorities, so that the reported issues may be verified and documented within the ongoing investigation. Officers also emphasise that conducting an investigation against a person represents a stage in the criminal procedure, regulated by the Code of Criminal Procedure, without undermining the principle of the presumption of innocence.
