Adam attacked after leaving criminal gang
Adam left a criminal network. Subsequently, he was assaulted four times over the course of six months. On one occasion, he stood naked on a hillside whilst blows rained down on him – a punishment for having stopped working for the gang.
Many who try to break with their past are threatened and beaten. In some cases, people have even lost their lives.
Now Adam's mother tells of the constant fear.
School worked well until Adam started secondary school. Then something changed. According to his mother, the son began associating with the wrong people and was drawn into a criminal environment.
– He was so young when it started. He was a child, she tells Blekinge Läns Tidning.
Adam began selling drugs. When he finally wanted to leave that life behind, the problems emerged. The gang demanded he pay debts that did not exist – fabricated fines as punishment for leaving. The sum amounted to 100,000 kronor.
– They sent pictures of weapons and wrote that they would shoot him, his mother recounts.
On one occasion, Adam was forced to stand naked on a hillside whilst being beaten. He has also been chased with a knife and beaten with implements.
The family has filed a police report of the incidents but do not feel protected. His mother says the police cannot do anything until something serious occurs.
– It feels like we are abandoned. We have nowhere to turn, she says.
She now wishes to tell what the family is going through in order to draw attention to the problem of how difficult it is to leave criminal gangs.
