A man who was acquitted this summer of the murder of a woman in Sigtunafjärden risks being charged anew. The prosecutor has appealed the district court's decision to the court of appeal.
The woman was found dead in an ice hole in January 2015. That same month, a man was taken into custody, but he was released as the evidence against him was insufficient.
Nearly ten years later, in autumn 2024, the police resumed work on the case. The reason was that a relative of the victim had requested a new assessment of the cause of death from the National Board of Forensic Medicine. In October last year, the man was arrested again and charges were brought.
After the trial concluded, the suspect was released from custody. In June this year, the district court chose to acquit him completely. The court ruled that there were not sufficiently strong grounds to believe in the alleged motive. Furthermore, the court found that the investigation could not rule out that the woman had come to the ice hole in a way other than what the prosecutor had claimed.
The man has throughout denied having anything to do with the death.
