Fake doctor in Sundsvall convicted of gross fraud – forged degree certificate exposed

Fake doctor worked for months at health centre in Sundsvall

According to SVT.se, Sundsvall District Court recently convicted a woman of gross fraud and fraud of an ordinary degree after she worked for several months as a junior doctor without medical training or a medical licence.

The woman claimed to have completed ten terms on the medical programme at Karolinska Institute. Using the fabricated CV, she obtained employment at a health centre in Sundsvall, where she worked for approximately six months. Before that, she had done summer locum work within ASIH – advanced care at home – in the Stockholm Region.

From the outset, her supervisor and colleagues reacted to her lacking medical knowledge. She had difficulty with basic clinical examinations, including listening to the heart in the correct location, and lacked knowledge of medical record keeping. She also made errors when prescribing medications.

The employment was conditional on her providing a Ladok transcript confirming her study results. Despite repeated reminders, she never submitted any such certificate, instead citing various excuses. After approximately one and a half weeks of work, she went on sick leave and subsequently became unreachable.

When the degree certificate was examined, it was found to be forged and the woman was found to lack a medical degree. The whole matter was discovered four years ago.

The district court acquits her, however, on the charge of gross forgery of documents, as the court finds it cannot be proven.

The sentence is protective supervision. She is also ordered to pay damages to the Västernorrland Region and the Stockholm Region totalling 288,480 kronor.
