A 51-year-old man has been acquitted of murder charges after his wife was found dead in an ice hole in Sigtuna in January 2015. Attunda District Court found that the prosecution failed to rule out all other reasonable explanations for the woman's death.
The man was arrested shortly after the 39-year-old mother of two was found drowned beneath the ice by a jetty. The couple was in the process of divorce and the woman had begun a relationship with a new partner. The man was held in custody for one month, but the preliminary investigation was then discontinued due to lack of evidence.
The case was reopened in 2024 after a family member requested information about the death. The man was detained again and charged in April this year on suspicion of drowning his wife. He has consistently denied the charges and claimed that the woman was alive when he left her at the jetty.
The court found that the man may have had both motive and opportunity to commit the crime, but that there remain other reasonable explanations for the woman's death. Two of the court's four judges wanted to convict the man of murder, but because the vote was tied, he is acquitted according to current rules.
The man is, however, sentenced to ten months in prison for drug offences after admitting to production and possession of narcotics for personal use.
