Svea Court of Appeal has increased the sentence for a 16-year-old boy who shot and killed a young father in Uppsala. He is now sentenced to four years of closed youth custody.
Boy convicted of murder – sentence increased in appeals court
A 16-year-old boy has had his sentence increased by Svea Court of Appeal after being convicted of killing a 52-year-old father in Uppsala in May last year. He is now sentenced to four years of closed youth custody, compared with three years handed down by the district court.
The prosecutor had requested that he be deported, but the appeals court rejected this. The court found that he has lived in Sweden since he was three years old, has no connection to his country of birth and speaks only Swedish. Although the offences are very serious, the court considers there are insufficient grounds to send him away.
Two of the judges disagreed and believed that deportation should have been approved, arguing that it involved repeated serious criminal offences.
The convicted boy has claimed that he acted under threat, afraid that those who ordered the killing would harm him or his relatives. Both in the district court and appeals court, he admitted that he took on the assignment in exchange for payment.
A 17-year-old co-defendant also has his sentence increased to four years of closed youth custody, from the previous three years and six months. Two other young men are acquitted for failing to report the murder.
