Ångermanland District Court has sentenced a 61-year-old Swedish man to four years and five months in prison. He sold his wife's sexual services to more than 120 purchasers over a three-year period.
The district court found the man guilty of serious pimping, attempted rape, threats against a public official, and minor drug offences. The court considered the callous exploitation of the woman as an aggravating circumstance.
According to the judgment, the man made his wife begin sex work and bore primary responsibility for organising the operation and acquiring customers. He booked meetings, planned which sexual acts would be performed, and set prices. In addition, the man drugged his wife, which led to her developing an addiction.
In the same trial, 28 men were convicted of purchasing sexual services from the exploited woman. Many of them had met her on multiple occasions.
The accused man denied the offences. His defence attorney Martina Olsson argued that the man helped his wife realise her dream of becoming a "luxury prostitute". The man did, however, admit that he had handled the bookings.
The court found that the prosecutor's account of the events was more credible. In addition to the prison sentence, the man was ordered to pay 200,000 kronor, approximately 18,000 euros, in damages to the woman.
