Care assistant used resident's bank card – convicted of serious fraud

A care assistant at a care home in Skåne has been convicted of multiple counts of serious fraud against a nearly 100-year-old woman, according to senioren.se, citing the newspaper Norra Skåne.

It was relatives who raised the alarm after examining bank statements and seeing purchases of food, petrol and ice cream, as well as cash withdrawals they did not recognise. A police investigation revealed that the care assistant in her 40s had carried out the transactions using the elderly woman's bank card.

A total of just over 77,000 kronor disappeared from the account over a two-month period in 2025. The elderly woman died before the investigation was completed, but had previously stated that she had not lent out her bank card.

The care assistant denied the charges and claimed she had been given permission to borrow the money and that she intended to pay it back.

The district court sentenced her to probation and 200 hours of community service. She is also required to repay the amount to the deceased woman's estate. She was suspended from her job in the summer of 2025.
