Phone call about cryptocurrency devastates bank account at Šmarski
Late in the afternoon, an unknown person rang a resident in the Šmarski pri Jelšah area, speaking in distorted Slovene. The stranger offered him an opportunity to earn money by investing in cryptocurrency. As reported by Slovenske novice, this call ended in severe financial loss.
With promises of lucrative investments, the fraudster persuaded the victim to install several applications on his mobile phone. In doing so, he unknowingly opened the door to his own phone and online banking.
Once the perpetrator gained access to online banking, he acted quickly. From the victim's account, he transferred larger sums of money in three consecutive transactions. Police have not disclosed the exact amount of the loss. It is also not yet known who is behind the fraud.
The police warn of the dangers of such telephone fraud in connection with the case. Perpetrators, under the guise of profitable investments, persuade victims to install remote access applications, which give strangers complete control over the phone and access to sensitive data, including online banking.
Police advise that when called by a stranger with promises of quick earnings, remain cautious: do not install applications at their request and never allow them access to your bank account.
