Three held as CANU seizes uncustomed alcohol in Windsor Estates raid
A Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) operation at a Windsor Estates property on Saturday resulted in the discovery of uncustomed alcohol and the arrest of three individuals, Kaieteur News reports.
CANU officers carried out a targeted contraband operation on October 3, 2026. The agency confirmed that no narcotics were found during the search.
The three individuals detained at the scene were taken to CANU Headquarters for questioning. One of those held reportedly told investigators that he rents the property from businessman Ernesto Choo-a-Fat.
CANU subsequently clarified that Choo-a-Fat was not the subject of the operation and is not the target of any ongoing investigation by the agency.
The raid nonetheless triggered controversy after Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed posted claims on his public Facebook page alleging that officers had uncovered guns, ammunition and contraband. Mohamed also referenced alleged political ties between Choo-a-Fat and President Irfaan Ali.
Choo-a-Fat's attorney, Sase R. Gunraj of Gunraj & Co., rejected those claims outright, describing Mohamed's statements as "false, malicious, and defamatory."
Gunraj noted that the property has been rented for more than three years and that his client is therefore "not in possession or control thereof." The attorney confirmed that the firm has been instructed to initiate legal proceedings against Mohamed immediately.
