Miner arrested in Guyana with 36 pounds of cocaine hidden in frozen fish

A 44-year-old miner was taken into custody after police found 36 pounds of suspected cocaine concealed inside frozen fish in his vehicle.

A 44-year-old miner is in custody after police intercepted his motor vehicle at Richmondville, Providence, East Bank Demerara on Sunday, September 27, 2026, and uncovered 36 pounds of suspected cocaine hidden inside frozen fish.

Kaieteur News reports that the operation was intelligence-driven. Ranks from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) stopped the vehicle — of which the miner was the sole occupant — and conducted a search of the trunk.

Officers found two bags containing frozen fish. A closer examination of the fish revealed 15 parcels packed with a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine, concealed within the fish themselves.

The miner was subsequently arrested and transported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters. The suspected narcotics and the motor vehicle were also taken in as part of the investigation. The suspect remains in custody as the probe continues, the GPF stated.
