Trial begins for Arakaka man accused in 2014 hammer killing of Brazilian miner

The trial of Samuel Allen, charged with the murder of Brazilian gold miner Joao De Souza at Arakaka, Region One, got underway on Monday, stabroeknews.com reports.

Allen is alleged to have killed De Souza on April 2nd, 2014 at Five Miles, Arakaka, during the course of a robbery. He was 18 years old at the time.

The case is being heard before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow. State Prosecutor Sarah Martin opened proceedings by calling several witnesses to present evidence, each of whom was then cross-examined by Allen's defence attorney, Maxwell McKay.

According to reports, De Souza was walking along a passageway toward his mining camp when Allen allegedly followed him, struck him on the head with a hammer, and robbed him.

The trial was expected to continue the following day.
