Ex-MP Sears Remanded as Co-Accused Sandy Jailed in Marijuana Case
Former Alliance For Change Member of Parliament Devin Sears was remanded to prison at the Linden Magistrate's Court after pleading not guilty to drug trafficking charges, newssourcegy.com reports. His co-accused, 69-year-old Albert Sandy, was immediately sentenced to four years in jail after entering a guilty plea in the same case.
The two men appeared in court three days after police arrested them at the Bamia check-point, where a search of a mini-bus uncovered several large parcels of marijuana weighing approximately 650 pounds. Sears was the driver of the vehicle; Sandy was the only other passenger.
During questioning, Sears denied ownership of the drugs, stating he was transporting tourism plants. Sandy, a farmer from the Upper Berbice River community of Tacama, claimed ownership of the marijuana and told investigators he had hired Sears to transport him and his cargo to Parika.
Sears' attorney, Nigel Hughes, requested bail at the hearing, arguing that the former MP was not a flight risk and would comply with any court-imposed conditions. The prosecution objected, citing the seriousness of the charge and the substantial quantity of marijuana involved. The magistrate refused bail and remanded Sears to prison until 11 November, when the matter is expected to continue.
The 39-year-old had been a prominent figure within the Alliance For Change and led the party's campaign in Linden during the 2025 elections. The mini-bus he was driving at the time of his arrest belongs to the Region 10 Tourism Committee, of which Sears served as Chairman. He has since tendered his resignation from that role.
