A man and a woman have been charged with perjury in connection with Conor McGregor's appeal in his civil sexual assault case, sports.yahoo.com reports. Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins appeared before a Dublin court on Tuesday following a police investigation into statements made during the proceedings.

The pair are accused of providing statements during the trial that were false, and that they knew to be false at the time of giving them.

The charges stem from McGregor's unsuccessful appeal against a civil jury verdict that found him liable for sexually assaulting Nikita Hand at a Dublin hotel in 2018. O'Reilly, a former neighbour of Hand, had submitted an affidavit claiming she witnessed a physical altercation between Hand and her ex-boyfriend around the same period as the alleged assault. Hand denied those allegations, and the evidence was subsequently withdrawn from the appeal.

Following the original jury verdict, McGregor was ordered to pay Hand £206,000 — approximately $271,742 — plus legal fees.

McGregor has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the lengthy legal process. Ahead of his scheduled UFC comeback fight against Max Holloway in July, he addressed the case directly.

"I am an innocent man," McGregor said. "I'll stand for my innocence until the day I go out. This is still a situation where I fight. There's a reason it didn't go where it went and went to a civil trial. It is what it is. It stings deep. I continue to fight."

He added: "I know the truth. I know that lying lips are an abomination to the lord. I know that anything done in darkness will soon come to light. I trust in god that it's coming. You best believe it's coming, and I look very, very forward to the day."

The investigation into O'Reilly and Cummins had been ongoing since McGregor's appeal failed in court. No trial date has yet been set for the two defendants.
