Off-duty officer arrested after man stabbed multiple times in Grand Harbour
A serving Royal Cayman Islands Police Service officer has been arrested and suspended from duty following a violent assault in the Hurley's parking lot in Red Bay on Friday night, Cayman News Service reports.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 9:30pm after multiple witnesses observed a man, visibly bloodied and injured, calling for help. The victim had arranged to meet the off-duty officer — a woman he knew — at the car park. When he entered her vehicle, a second man inside the car stabbed him multiple times with a bladed weapon.
The wounded man managed to exit the vehicle before the two suspects drove away. Witnesses posting on social media identified the vehicle as a Honda Fit. As the car fled along Shamrock Road, it reportedly collided with another Honda Fit. Both the officer and the man accompanying her then left the scene on foot, but the woman was subsequently located and taken into custody.
The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported by ambulance to hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. A second male suspect remains at large.
The RCIPS issued two releases on Saturday — the first describing the assault and the second confirming, in response to social media posts, that one of those involved was a serving officer. The officer has been suspended with immediate effect pending further investigation.
"The RCIPS takes any allegation of criminal conduct involving a serving police officer extremely seriously," a police spokesperson said. "The officer concerned has been suspended from duty with immediate effect, pending further investigation and the establishment of the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Cayman Islands Ombudsman has also been formally notified of the matter."
The spokesperson added that all allegations involving RCIPS officers are handled impartially and that officers are held to the same legal standards as any other member of the public.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the area to come forward. Individuals with information can contact George Town Police Station at 949-4222, or submit anonymous tips via the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777. Tips may also be submitted through Cayman Crime Stoppers.
