Man shot dead by police during apartment fire response in Hagerstown
Maryland's Independent Investigations Division (IID), operating under the Office of the Attorney General, is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting in Hagerstown that took place on Friday, 23 October, heraldmailmedia.com reports.
At approximately 4:50 p.m. that day, the Hagerstown Fire Department (HFD) was already on scene at an apartment fire in the unit block of Randolph Avenue. Firefighters encountered an adult man inside the burning apartment and called for police assistance. Upon arrival, Hagerstown Police Department (HPD) officers established a perimeter around the building.
The man ran out of the apartment toward the officers. Officers issued verbal commands and deployed tasers. When those measures did not stop him, officers discharged their service weapons, striking the man. Two knives were recovered from the scene.
Emergency medical services, already present at the fire scene, transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers sustained injuries during the incident.
The IID said it will generally release the name of the deceased and the names of the officers involved within two business days of the incident, though that period may be extended under IID protocol if necessary.
All officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras. Footage from those cameras is expected to be released within 20 business days, though delays may occur if investigators require additional time to complete witness interviews, if technical redaction of civilian identities is needed, or to allow the victim's family to view the footage before it is made public.
Anyone with information about the incident, including cellphone or private surveillance video, is asked to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or by email at [email protected].
