Philadelphia officer shot 12 times leaves hospital after two-week recovery

Officer Hector Rodriguez was discharged from hospital at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, two weeks after being shot 12 times in an ambush in West Philadelphia, 6abc.com reports.

Fellow officers, family members and supporters gathered outside the hospital to applaud as Rodriguez was reunited with his wife and five children.

Rodriguez and Sgt. Shane Seiber had responded to a residence in West Philadelphia on 10 October when they were ambushed. Seiber was killed in the attack; Rodriguez sustained 12 gunshot wounds. Police officials say his condition has improved tremendously since then.

The suspect, 35-year-old Eric Lewis, faces a string of charges in Philadelphia, including murder and attempted murder for allegedly shooting Rodriguez and firing at other officers. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced on Thursday that Lewis has also been indicted on federal charges.

Seiber, posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant, was laid to rest on Tuesday. Hundreds of law enforcement officers, family members, friends and community members attended the funeral service to honour his life and his years of service to the Philadelphia Police Department.
