Kentucky woman faces life in prison over child abuse charges

Lauren Winans, 31, from Kentucky has been arrested and charged with incest, sodomy and sexual abuse following allegations she sexually abused a child younger than 12, The Sun reports.

Court documents state that Winans "committed the offence of incest when she had sexual intercourse or deviate sexual intercourse with a person whom she knew to be an ancestor who was less than twelve years of age." The alleged abuse is said to have taken place between 1 January 2022 and 20 November 2022.

The victim, referred to only as C.G.W. in all court documents, is believed to be a relative of Winans. The precise nature of the relationship has not been made public.

Winans was booked into Nelson County Jail and is currently being held on a $250,000 bond. Her arrest record describes her as having strawberry blonde hair and green eyes. She is set to be arraigned at Nelson Circuit Court on 5 November.

According to the New York Post, an assessment of the charges she faces means Winans could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.

Her husband, Andy Winans, is reported to have worked as a police officer with the Nelson County Sheriff's Office. A statement from that office confirmed he resigned from his post in early 2026 and subsequently joined the Bardstown Police Department.

The statement read: "The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is the primary investigating agency regarding the allegations involving Lauren Winans. The Nelson County Sheriff's Office was not aware of these allegations, holds no details regarding the case, and is not involved in the investigation. Inquiries should be directed to KSP."

The office added: "Andy Winans is no longer employed by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office. He resigned from our agency and joined the Bardstown Police Department in early 2026. Our office remains fully committed to accountability, transparency, and upholding the trust of the Nelson County community."

There is no suggestion that Andy Winans or anyone else was involved in the alleged abuse.
