Man shot dead on Midtown subway platform after argument, NYPD investigating
A man was fatally shot on the northbound E train platform at the Seventh Avenue-53rd Street subway station in Midtown Manhattan shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, abc7ny.com reports.
According to police, the victim and the suspect were engaged in an argument on the platform before the shooting. The altercation moved onto the train and then back onto the platform. Investigators are still determining whether shots were fired on the platform, on the train, or both.
The victim, said to be in his thirties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead there. His identity has not been released by authorities.
Police stated the shooting was not a random act.
The incident caused disruptions to subway service in the area. The MTA reported that uptown E trains were rerouted via the F line between West Fourth Street and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue, while uptown C and D trains bypassed the Seventh Avenue station.
MTA Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper issued a statement on Saturday: "Guns have no place in transit which is why we've strongly supported New York State's legal fight to make sure it's illegal to carry them in the subway system. This was evidently a dispute between two individuals that ended tragically, and we have coordinated with the NYPD on the investigation from the earliest minutes — especially to retrieve video from platform and train car cameras. The perpetrator will be caught and should face maximum consequences from the justice system. It is fortunate nobody outside the fight was hurt."
No arrests have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.
