Fatal shooting at Midtown Manhattan subway station leaves one dead
A man was shot and killed Saturday at the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan, according to nbcnews.com. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 12:21 p.m. and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m.
The victim, whose identity has not been released pending family notification, was believed to be in his 30s. The New York Police Department said a suspect approached the victim on the northbound E train platform, shot him once in the chest, and fled on foot.
At a subsequent news conference, police said the dispute between the two men had moved from the platform onto a train and then back onto the platform. Investigators were still working to determine the precise location where the shot was fired.
Police described the shooting as a targeted act, not a random one. The station sits at the heart of the Theater District, an area heavily frequented by tourists and theatergoers.
MTA Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper called for the harshest possible response from the justice system. "The perpetrator should face maximum consequences from the justice system," Kemper said, adding: "It is fortunate nobody outside the fight was hurt."
Yellow police tape cordoned off the Seventh Avenue station entrance throughout Saturday afternoon as investigators continued their search for the suspect.
