Two men dead after police shootout at Long Beach residence

Two men were found shot dead inside a Long Beach home early Saturday morning after officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect in the California Heights neighbourhood, nbclosangeles.com reports.

Long Beach Police Department officers were dispatched at approximately 1:45 a.m. to the 3700 block of Gardenia Avenue, near Cherry Avenue and Bixby Road, following a call reporting two shots fired from a nearby residence.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a male adult suspect inside the home. "The suspect threatened to shoot the officers," police said in a statement. "Officers retreated to a safe distance and requested assistance."

The suspect then opened fire on officers, and one officer returned fire. The suspect remained barricaded inside the residence, prompting the deployment of a SWAT team.

SWAT officers eventually entered the home and discovered two men dead from gunshot wounds to the upper body. The circumstances surrounding each death remain under investigation, police said.

"Multiple firearms and evidence were recovered from inside the residence," authorities stated. Officers at the scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, and the Long Beach Police Department said it is reviewing the footage and will release it to the public as soon as possible.

No officers were reported injured. The identities of the two deceased men have not been released, and investigators have not confirmed whether either victim was the suspect involved in the exchange of gunfire.
