Suspect called for help before girlfriend was found dead

A 67-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend at a south Sacramento home, psnews.us reports. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on Saturday, the day after the woman's body was discovered.

Wendell Celestine was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and deemed ineligible for bail, according to the office's October 24 news release.

Deputies responded at around 11 p.m. on Friday, October 23, to a property in the 4900 block of El Paraiso Avenue. They arrived after Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel had already been called to the scene — initially for a medical aid request. Celestine had reported finding his 56-year-old girlfriend unconscious.

When fire crews arrived, they observed signs of trauma on the woman, along with broken glass and damaged furniture inside the home. Sheriff's officials described the conditions as consistent with a possible physical altercation.

Deputies detained Celestine upon arrival. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators subsequently took over the investigation.

Officials noted that Celestine and the woman had previously been married and divorced, but had resumed a dating relationship at the time of the incident.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office is expected to release the woman's identity. The Sheriff's Office did not specify a cause of death in its release.
