A man was shot by Philadelphia police officers on the Ben Franklin Parkway in Center City Friday morning, following a confrontation that began shortly after 11 a.m. near 21st Street, 6abc.com reports.
Law enforcement sources told Action News that officers initially responded to reports of a man firing a gun indiscriminately in the area. Upon arrival, officers shut down the surrounding streets and attempted to negotiate with the individual, who continued to point a firearm at police.
The situation escalated when the man fired at officers, prompting two police officers to open fire. The man was rushed to hospital; no update on his condition had been issued at the time of reporting.
Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed a heavy presence of police and SWAT personnel at the scene. The Parkway remained closed in the area as authorities managed the incident.
