Conflicting Police Accounts Follow Accidental Shooting at Kingston-Throop Station
An NYPD officer accidentally discharged their firearm at the Kingston-Throop subway station in Bed-Stuy shortly before 5:00pm on September 10, bkreader.com reports.
Police initially told the Gothamist that no one had been struck during the incident. Days later, however, the department reversed course, issuing a statement acknowledging that a fragment had "come into contact" with two bystanders. The NYPD provided no further explanation for how three people connected to the incident were ultimately hospitalised.
Council Member Chi Ossé, who represents Bed-Stuy and north Crown Heights, posted a statement on social media condemning the lack of clarity. "To date, my office still lacks a clear account of what occurred," Ossé wrote, adding that his office "will not accept vague explanations and a lack of transparency as an answer."
The NYPD remained largely unresponsive to requests for comment, stating only that it had no additional information beyond the initial statement. A police official did note early on that something had been lodged in the officer's gun.
Both officers involved were placed on modified duty following the incident, according to the Gothamist. BKReader has indicated it plans a further investigation into the matter.
